Visiting China visa-free for a trek
Who can enter China without a visa, how the 30-day visa-free scheme and 240-hour transit work, and how to plan a Yunnan or Sichuan trek around them.
Visa rules change. This guide explains how the schemes work; always confirm your own case with the Chinese embassy or the National Immigration Administration before you book flights.
China has opened up a lot for short visits. Many travellers no longer need a visa for a trekking trip, and US travellers can often use visa-free transit if they plan their route the right way.
Option 1: 30-day visa-free entry
Citizens of 50 countries, including most of the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Canada, can enter China without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism. You need a passport valid for the length of your stay and a return or onward ticket.
The scheme currently runs to 31 December 2026. Check whether it has been extended before you book a 2027 trip.
Option 2: 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit
US citizens are not on the 30-day list, but they can use 240-hour visa-free transit. The key rule is that you must be in transit: you arrive from one country or region and leave for a different one.
- Works: fly USA → Kunming, trek, then fly Kunming → Hong Kong → USA.
- Doesn’t work: fly USA → Kunming and Kunming → USA on the same round trip.
You must enter and leave through designated ports. In our regions these include Kunming Changshui and Lijiang Sanyi airports in Yunnan, and Chengdu Tianfu and Shuangliu airports in Sichuan. Yunnan and Sichuan are both inside the area where you can travel.
Planning a trek around 240 hours
Ten days is plenty for a classic Yunnan trek. Our Grand Traverse is designed to fit, and our Tiger Leaping Gorge Classic and Yubeng & Meili treks leave room to spare.
Book your onward ticket out of China before you fly in. The airline will check it at check-in, and so will the border officer on arrival.
If you need a visa anyway
If you are staying longer, or your nationality is not covered, apply for a tourist (L) visa. We can provide the itinerary and booking confirmations the application asks for.
